Visions of America: Learning Guides

Library and Museum Youth Programming Manual

Looking for simple hands-on workshops for children ages 5-13 to foster learning?  PBS Books has you covered.

PBS Books partnered with the Institute of Museum and Library Services to create an award-winning series, Visions of America (VOA). VOA shares and celebrates lesser-known American stories as we approach America’s 250th anniversary—Cuban Americans, Asian Americans, Japanese Americans, African Americans, Arab Americans, and Native Americans. PBS Books designed one-hour workshops for children librarians and museum educators to offer hands-on experiences and enabling your young people to delve into the lives and culture of lesser-known Americans. Whether it is celebrating a heritage month or just sharing outstanding stories to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, look at our Visions of America Library and Museum Youth Programming Manual for your next program idea. It is free and created by professionals like you who developed what they wanted to use in their classroom.

Classroom Learning Guide

Educators, this school year inspire your secondary school students with a classroom education guide including video clips, lesson plans, and student activities based on the Visions of America: All Stories, All People, All Places series.

The accompanying classroom educational guide was designed to provide Social Studies and English Language Arts teachers the opportunity to bring these unique voices and stories into their classrooms and has been arranged topically into standards-based learning plans to help teachers and their students meet learning objectives

Take students on a rich and diverse journey with video clip highlights featuring stories of Cuban Americans, Asian Pacific Americas, Negro Leagues Baseball, American Jazz, First Americans, and more while learning about the institutions that safeguard and share these uniquely American tales. Across 8 thematic sections such as Rights and Responsibilities of Citizens, Unity and Culture and Identity, students will be prompted to contemplate essential questions.
